Dr. Attilio Stella
The title of Dr. Attilio Stella thesis is “Signoria ecclesiastica e comunità rurali nel medioevo (secoli XII-XIII). San Giorgio in Braida di Verona e i villaggi del Fiumenovo.”
The thesis examines the dialectics between rural lordship, urban institutions and rural communities in twelfth- and thirteenth-century communal Italy, and reassesses the grand narrative of the “conquest of the contado” by the city-states. Inspired by micro-historical methodology, the analysis of the archive of the Augustinian Canons regulars of St Giorgio in Braida of Verona offers insights on how three communities located on the border between the districts of Verona, Vicenza and Padua developed different social structures and configurations of power, and how such different backgrounds entailed different institutional outcomes in terms of both local ‘micro-lordships’ and relationship with city and regional powers.
